Contemporary dance in Vancouver: choose a training route that fits where you are now.

Start with the kind of session you need
A first class, ongoing professional practice and a rehearsal for your own work solve different problems. Decide whether you want instruction, a regular training rhythm or uninterrupted time to develop material before choosing a provider.
For a class with a clear level
Harbour Dance Centre ↗ offers adult classes across levels and styles, including contemporary. Read the current class description and ask the studio how its level names translate into expected experience. If you are returning after a break, a familiar style at a gentler level can help you assess the pace.
For ongoing contemporary practice
Training Society of Vancouver ↗ publishes a changing programme of contemporary training. Check the current teacher, session description, registration process and suitability for your practice. A rotating programme can expose you to different approaches; it also means the same time slot need not be the same class each week.
For a longer course of study
SFU’s dance programme ↗ is a university study route. Read its programme and admissions information if you want sustained academic and artistic study. Keep that decision separate from finding a drop-in class for next week.
For making your own work
A teaching programme cannot replace the room and time needed to rehearse your own material. Set a goal for each booking: testing a phrase, working with a collaborator or running a section. Choose a room with an appropriate floor and confirm your activity is permitted. Our studio rental comparison ↗ provides a starting shortlist.
Before you register
- Read the level and prerequisites rather than relying on the style name.
- Check the current location, duration, cost and cancellation terms.
- Ask what to bring and whether observation or a first-session option is available.
- Plan travel and arrival time so your warm-up is not rushed.
